The story of QuantumDiamonds began with the doctoral research of Fleming Bruckmaier and Kristina Liu at the Bucher Lab of the Technical University of Munich. There, they developed quantum sensors for chemical analyses, which soon revealed further potential applications — in fields such as battery manufacturing, biology, and semiconductor production. Kevin Berghoff validated and prioritized these applications as part of the XPLORE program.
The semiconductor industry, in particular, showed great potential. Here, the ultra-sensitive sensors, based on nitrogen-vacancy centers in diamonds, enable the early detection of production defects. This method allows for precise mapping of current density in complex circuits with sub-micrometer resolution, leading to improved chip yield and significant cost savings for manufacturers.
In 2023 the team was the winner at UnternehmerTUM's Demo Day and received funding from the Federal Agency for Disruptive Innovation (SPRIN-D). In December 2023 they secured seed funding of 7 million EUR.
How has FlixMobility benefited from UnternehmerTUM?
UnternehmerTUM has supported QuantumDiamonds from the very beginning and significantly contributed to their success. The founders were brought together into a complementary team through the XPLORE program and financially supported by XPRENEURS.
In addition, QuantumDiamonds received a Prototyping Grant, which enabled the development of the first prototypes. Later, the company secured its first venture capital funding.
The TUM Venture Lab "Quantum" was especially helpful in establishing industry contacts and addressing technical matters.
